Aesthetics and Regenerative Therapies

PRP

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) uses your body’s natural regenerative abilities to promote and accelerate healing and repair damaged tissues. As a specialist in regenerative medicine, Lakshmana Madala, MD, FIPP, at Pain Consultants of Michigan/ A & R Therapies uses PRP injections to heal musculoskeletal injuries and degenerative joint diseases. To learn whether you’re a good candidate for PRP treatment, call the office in Saginaw, Michigan, or book an appointment online today.

PRP Q & A

What is PRP?

PRP is blood plasma that contains a higher number of platelets than are normally found in blood. Inside your body, platelets stimulate healing; injections containing PRP take advantage of this regenerative ability by depositing a concentrated amount of platelets directly at the site of injured or diseased tissues.

If you’re scheduled for a PRP injection, the solution is made in the office from your own blood, so you don’t need to worry about side effects. Dr. Madala draws a sample of your blood, then spins it in a centrifuge. This process separates the platelets and plasma from other blood cells, creating the PRP needed for your injection.

What happens after PRP is injected?

Platelets are rich sources of proteins called growth factors. When Dr. Madala injects PRP, the growth factors get to work in the following ways:

  • Recruiting cells to the area
  • Boosting cell effectiveness
  • Developing new blood vessels
  • Stimulating the production of collagen, muscles, ligaments, tendons, and cartilage
  • Preventing the degeneration of healthy cells
  • Reducing inflammation

Using your body’s natural ability to regenerate new tissues, PRP heals your condition and relieves your pain.

What health conditions are treated with PRP?

PRP is increasingly used in many types of medical and cosmetic procedures. In fact, it’s used for very diverse therapies as it’s applied during surgical procedures to promote tissue healing and is also proven to restore hair growth.

The team at Pain Consultants of Michigan/ A & R Therapies primarily inject PRP to relieve pain and heal musculoskeletal conditions such as:

  • Arthritis of the knee, hip, or shoulder
  • Rotator cuff tears
  • Tennis elbow
  • Hip bursitis
  • Ligament and tendon injuries
  • Chronic back pain
  • Neck pain

PRP injections are effective for acute and chronic conditions. They’re also beneficial for a variety of inflammatory conditions and for injuries that are slow to heal.

Dr. Madala administers PRP using imaging that shows the targeted tissues and guides needle placement. With this technique, you can be sure that your PRP is deposited directly at the area where the platelets are needed for healing.

As a specialist in regenerative medicine, Dr. Madala determines whether the healing power of PRP might benefit your specific health concern. If you have questions about PRP treatment or you’d like to schedule an appointment, call Pain Consultants of Michigan/ A & R Therapies today or use the online booking feature.

Hair Loss

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is an injection treatment that uses the parts of a person’s own blood to stimulate hair growth. A small quantity of blood is drawn from the patient. The blood is spun in a centrifuge to separate its main components (Red Blood Cells, Platelet Rich Plasma and Plasma). The platelet rich plasma is separated from the rest of the blood and then activated with a small amount of calcium to signal the growth factors to begin working. This in turn amplifies the healing process. A growth factor is capable of stimulating cellular growth, proliferation and healing. PRP is then injected into the thinning areas of the scalp. The injection causes a mild inflammation that triggers the body’s natural response for the platelets to begin the healing process. This healing process restores damaged tissue and hair follicles to promote hair growth. Treatments are done in a series of 3, 4 weeks apart, and then every 6 months- 1 year (depending on the response).

How does PRP help with hair loss?

PRP is being used more and more in medical and cosmetic procedures. Research has shown that PRP restores hair growth by stimulating the cells to the area, helps to develop new blood vessels and prevents further degeneration of hair follicles.

Does it work?

In 2019, a team of researchers completed a systematic review of PRP on hair loss. They retrieved 132 papers which included 262 androgenic alopecia patients. Through this analysis, the researchers found that the treatment of PRP for hair restoration and hair loss locally increased the patient’s hair numbers per cm2 for those that completed the treatment versus the control group that did not receive the treatment (Mao, Zhang & Fan, 2019).

Another review examined findings of 19 studies to investigate PRP as a treatment for hair loss. This analysis included 460 people and reported that PRP treatments for hair restoration demonstrated successful hair growth in androgenic and alopecia areata (Hesseler, & Shyam, 2019).

Will it Help Me?

According to the research, the best candidates for hair restoration with PRP are those who have recently begun loosing hair, PRP has not been found effective for those who are completely bald as it won’t regrow all lost hair. This is a treatment option for those that have thinning hair, receding hair lines and those diagnosed with androgenic alopecia and alopecia areata.  A consultation is the best way to determine if this is a treatment option for you!

Cell Therapies

Although some types of cell therapies have been used for years, others represent today’s most innovative and exciting regenerative treatments. Lakshmana Madala, MD, FIPP, at Pain Consultants of Michigan/ A & R Therapies is an expert in all aspects of regenerative medicine. His patients benefit from his experience by gaining access to cutting-edge treatments such as exosome therapy to naturally heal tissues and relieve pain. To learn more, call the office in Saginaw, Michigan, or schedule an appointment online today.

What are cell therapies?

Cell therapy is a unique medical treatment that uses live cells to treat a disease or injury. The cells may come from your own body (an autologous source) or from another person (an allogenic source) who has donated their cells.

The cells are injected at the source of your injury or diseased tissues, where they use their natural ability to promote healing and trigger new tissue production. Examples of long-standing and effective cell therapies include bone marrow transplants and blood transfusions. One of today’s most innovative cell therapies consists of exosomes.

What are exosomes?

Exosomes are tiny vesicles, or sacs, that are released by cells throughout your body. These vesicles act like messengers that communicate with other cells using the biochemicals contained inside the sac.

The substances carried by exosomes activate other cells to respond. Depending on their contents, exosomes can trigger numerous responses. They may stimulate tissue regeneration or ensure your immune system mounts an aggressive defense against pathogens.

Exosomes generally carry a variety of proteins, some of which are vital for metabolism. They also transport vital molecules such as DNA and RNA. They can carry tumor antigens sent by your immune system to fight cancer. On the other hand, exosomes are also released by cancer cells, where they may play a role in spreading the cancer.

Although these type of therapies are often used in regenerative medicine, the fact is that one of the primary ways cells promote healing is by releasing exosomes. These exosomes encourage wound healing by activating the release of growth factors and stimulating cell regeneration. The messenger-RNA in exosomes released by cells may also play a key role in healing diseased and injured tissues.

What conditions may be treated with exosome cell therapies?

Exosomes can be isolated, extracted, and used in medical therapies. Dr. Madala uses exosomes to treat conditions such as sports injuries, neck pain, chronic back pain, and disc problems.

Dr. Madala specializes in regenerative therapies and stays up to date on the latest developments, offering today’s most innovative and effective treatments that use the body’s natural cells to heal.

Laser Hair Removal

Everyone who has to perform the daily chore of shaving and plucking can understand why laser hair removal is one of the most frequently requested cosmetic procedures. Lakshmana Madala, MD, FIPP, and the aesthetic team at Pain Consultants of Michigan/ A & R Therapies offer permanent hair removal using the Vectus® laser, which is safe for all skin types and can remove hair from virtually everywhere on your body. To schedule an appointment, call the office in Saginaw, Michigan, or use the online booking feature.

How do lasers safely remove hair?

When lasers operate at a specific wavelength, they’re only absorbed by the dark pigments in hair follicles. This allows the laser to safely pass through your skin to reach the follicles. As follicles absorb the laser’s energy, they’re heated just enough to be destroyed. As a result, they stop growing hair.

Why do I need multiple treatments to remove all the hairs?

You need multiple treatments because of the growth cycle followed by each hair follicle. The follicles actively grow hair for about two to six years, then they stop growing hair, go through a short transitional stage, and enter a resting phase.

The hairs in the follicle start to loosen during the transitional stage, then they fall out during the resting stage. After several months at rest, the follicle once again grows a new hair.

These growth cycles affect your laser hair removal because the laser is only effective when the follicle is in a growth phase. Since each follicle follows it’s own time schedule, you’ll need several treatments spaced out before you’ll catch all the hairs in a growth phase.

What are the advantages of laser hair removal using the Vectus laser?

The team at Pain Consultants of Michigan/ A & R Therapies use the Vectus laser for permanently removing hair because it has advantages such as:

Safe for all skin types

Removes more hair in less time

Advanced Contact Cooling™ improves comfort

Vectus can be used to remove hair from nearly everywhere on your body, including your face, back, chest, arms, underarms, legs, and bikini area.

What should I expect during laser hair removal?

The Advanced Contact Cooling feature makes laser hair removal nearly painless, but each patient is different. If your skin is more sensitive, talk with your aesthetician about a topical anesthesia.

Your Vectus session takes up to 60 minutes depending on the size of the area being treated. After your treatment, your skin may be slightly red, but this won’t last long. You don’t need to plan for downtime and can get back to your daily routine as soon as your session is finished.

If you’re ready to permanently do away with unwanted hair, call Pain Consultants of Michigan/ A & R Therapies or schedule an appointment online today.

Wrinkles

You can fight the effects of aging and diminish the appearance of wrinkles without surgery when you choose procedures like cosmetic injectables, medical grade skincare, PRP, micro needling and skin-tightening with TempSure™ Envi.   Kari Sullivan, FNP-C at Pain Consultants of Michigan/ A & R Therapies has extensive experience helping patients rejuvenate their skin. To learn which procedure is best for your skin needs, call the office in Saginaw, Michigan, or book an appointment online today.

What factors contribute to wrinkles?

As you get older, your skin produces less collagen and elastin, which means it loses strength and elasticity. Your skin also thins out and oil production declines. The natural, healthy layer of fat under your skin loses volume, starts to accumulate in pockets, and droops downward.

All these changes work together to create wrinkles over the years. If you spend time out in the sun without wearing a sunscreen, the ultraviolet (UV) light accelerates wrinkle formation.

The aesthetics team at Pain Consultants of Michigan/ A & R Therapies offers several treatments that can help diminish the appearance of wrinkles, including microneedling, and TempSure Envi skin tightening.

What is microneedling and how does it treat wrinkles?

Microneedling is performed using a device that contains numerous very fine needles (microneedles) to gently puncture your skin. These small, controlled wounds stimulate a healing response, which in turn boosts collagen and elastin production.

When old skin cells at the surface naturally shed, they’re replaced with new cells growing up from below the skin. Following microneedling, your new skin is stronger and better-toned thanks to the extra collagen and elastin.

Microneedling effectively improves numerous cosmetic concerns, such as:

Loose skin

Fine lines and wrinkles

Uneven skin tone

Brown spots and sun spots

Acne scars

Large pores

Microneedling can also be combined with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to enhance your skin’s rejuvenation. PRP is made from your own blood by taking a blood sample and processing it in a centrifuge. Spinning in the centrifuge separates platelets from other blood components, then they’re used for your PRP treatment.

After undergoing microneedling, your aesthetician applies PRP to your skin. The small punctures allow PRP to get under your skin, where the platelets promote healing, reduce inflammation, and stimulate the production of collagen, skin cells, blood vessels, and other tissues as needed.

How are wrinkles diminished with TempSure Envi?

TempSure Envi, or TempSure, uses radio-frequency (RF) energy to tighten your skin. RF waves safely pass through your skin to reach structures below the surface. As RF energy heats the deep tissues, it stimulates collagen production.

After treatment with TempSure, old skin at the surface is replaced with a new growth of collagen-rich skin. As a result, your skin becomes stronger and tighter, which diminishes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Cosmetic Injectables

Botox® (onabotulinumtoxinA)

Repeated facial expressions and shortening of the muscles overtime can create etched in lines of the skin. This is due to the breakdown of collagen and elastin in these areas where the skin is being folded repeatedly. Injections of Botox® to the targeted muscle decreases the muscle movement in the areas of concern. With consistent treatments, the muscles will relax and the etched-in lines will smooth and soften over time.

Botox® has been the #1 FDA approved anti-aging treatment for quite some time. It is more commonly referred to for cosmetic purpose but it is also used for many medical conditions such as chronic migraines and blepharospasm. It is non-toxic and does not cause botulism. Botox® is the purified protein of Botulinum toxin. You would actually need 200-300 times the number of units of the actual toxin for any negative effects. Botox® inactivates nerves by blocking acetylcholine that stimulates the muscles to contract. Botox® typically lasts 3-5 months, depending on your metabolism and dose. After your treatment, Botox may take up to 10 days to be effective.

Dermal Filler

As we age, our face begins to droop and fat pads descend, losing the youthful “V” shape to a more squared appearance. This is due to bone loss and the skin, fat, and muscle accumulating at the lower face. A&R Therapies use FDA approved hyaluronic acid dermal fillers, such as Juvederm® and Versa™, to contour, replace volume, and plump the skin. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the soft tissue. Hyaluronic acid can be synthetically produced from a process of bacterial fermentation, chemically stabilized, and purified for use as an injectable soft tissue filler. The hyaluronic acid in dermal fillers is biocompatible and is a non-animal product. Bringing volume to the areas, such as the cheeks, rebalances the facial structure. Lips are also a sign of youth but as we age, due to a decrease in collagen, the lips become thinner and turn inwards. Dermal filler is used to bring volume back to the lips and to smooth fine lines creating a soft, plump, youthful appearance to the mouth. Other areas we can treat with dermal filler include marionette lines and nasal labial folds. If you are worried about not being satisfied, although we know you will be, hyaluronic acid fillers can easily be reversed with an agent called hyaluronidase which is always stocked in the office. The dermal filler gives immediate results and, depending on the filler chosen, these results may last up to 2 years! The product is based on the goals of the patient and the area being treated.

Prior to your treatment, our nurse practitioner will discuss your goals and anatomy to find the best dose/treatment plan for you! At A&R Therapies we have a number of pain management techniques to make your treatment as painless as possible.

What is Dermaplaning?

A low-risk procedure which uses a sterile surgical blade to physically exfoliate the stratum corneum (2-3 weeks of dead skin cells) and vellus hair (peach fuzz). Removing this skin layer and fine hair will allow your skin care products to penetrate deeper, brighten dull skin and your makeup will be applied much smoother and evenly. It’s also been effective at reducing acne scarring, stimulates cellular turnover improves elasticity, stimulate circulation and improves texture. It is gentler than microdermabrasion, and causes minimal redness and trauma. Although this is not advised for those with active acne/breakouts.

The myth of the hair coming back darker and thicker is false. The hair that grows back will not be darker or thicker, however any hormone imbalance present within your anatomical system can alter the normal hair growth pattern. The only changes to the hair that will occur following this procedure is a blunt edge being formed as the hair begins to grow. Once the hair reaches its full length, the bluntness will be gone and the hair is what it once was.

This is a perfect procedure for those looking for a deep exfoliation without the use of chemicals or for those that are pregnant or nursing.

Dermaplaning is recommended every three to six weeks or anytime you are desiring glowing, radiant skin. This procedure also pairs perfectly with our microneedling procedure to enhance results!
