Microneedling: Scary or Safe?

What is it?

Microneedling involves a needle tipped device which creates tiny controlled micro injuries to the skin. The depth of the needle is important and should be customizable to each individual and area of the face. A&R Therapies is proud to offer the very first FDA cleared device Skinpen®. With this specific device, each patient receives their own stainless steel needle tipped cartridge which is disposed after each treatment. The device itself is a completely closed system, allowing no contamination between patients. These tiny injuries initiate an inflammatory response to naturally promote the increase of collagen/elastin.

How does this help my skin?

Collagen and elastin are the proteins which support the skin. These proteins can be lost due to exposure to UV light, smoking, poor diet, and aging. Collagen and elastin is lost through the natural aging process. This treatment helps to boost these essential skin proteins to tighten and tone the skin. Microneedling is ideal for all skin types and FDA cleared for the treatment of acne scars. Additional benefits include a reduction of fine lines/ wrinkles, dull skin and hyperpigmentation. This treatment also resurfaces dead skin cells and improves pore size.

Does it hurt?

Numbing cream is applied prior to the treatment which makes this painless with very little downtime. You can expect some initial redness/tightness for the first 3 days which improves gradually-similar to a mild sunburn. A skin care regimen for the first few days is provided along with additional after care instructions.

Does it work?

Although results vary, a study showed that a series of microneedling treatments increased collagen and elastin by 400%.

In addition, your personal results will depend on a variety of factors: environmental, lifestyle, medical history etc. These factors will be discussed and after care will be thoroughly explained to ensure you receive the best results.

How many will I need?

It is recommended to complete a series of 3-6 treatments (depending on the skin concern), 4-6 weeks apart but results can be seen after 1 treatment. With a package of 3 treatments, a 90 day post procedure protocol is included and highly recommended. The post procedure protocol has been clinically tested to optimize results and prevents adverse reactions from using skincare products that are not recommended.

What about maintenance?

To maintain results, a treatment is recommended every 3-6 months.

What are some other things I can add to microneedling?

Radiofrequency is a great way to target areas on the face that are more of a concern. A full face treatment can also be performed prior to microneedling which will provide a universal boost of skin tightening to your treatment. Platelet rich plasma is also a great addition to enhance results using your body’s own growth factors to heal the injured tissue and provide faster healing!
