Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is an injection treatment that uses the components of a person’s own blood to stimulate hair growth. A small quantity of blood is drawn from the patient. The blood is spun in a centrifuge to separate its main components (Red Blood Cells, Platelet Rich Plasma and Plasma). The platelet rich plasma is separated from the rest of the blood and then activated with a small amount of calcium to allow the release of growth factors from the platelets which in turn amplifies the healing process. A growth factor is capable of stimulating cellular growth, proliferation and healing. PRP is then injected into the thinning areas of the scalp. The injection causes a mild inflammation that triggers the body's natural response for the platelets to organize in the tissue and release a number of enzymes to promote healing. This healing process restores damaged tissue and hair follicles to promote hair growth. Treatments are done in a series of 3, 4 weeks apart, then every 6 months- 1 year (depending on the response). According to researchers, the best candidates for this treatment are those who have recently begun to loose hair. It has not been found to be effective for those that are completely bald as it won't regrow all lost hair. If you have a receding hairline, thinning hair, androgenic alopecia or alopecia areata this may be the treatment for you!
